Why Choosing a Word of the Year Matters
Have you come across articles, lists or recommendations for choosing your Word of the Year?
Do you play along for a few weeks on Instagram and then forget your single word along with all those other well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions?
That’s what I used to do for years….until I found an expert in choosing your WOTY. She changed my perspective completely and as of today - August 31, 2024 I am actively reminded of and use my WOTY every day as my guiding word.
I used it think it was kind of pointless, really how much can one word change my life?
Last year I decided to try it...but I forgot my word after about a month and again went back to thinking it wasn't a relevant exercise for me.
This year I had a long conversation with a client about the intention behind the Word of the Year and how the power of language has transformed her business each year.
Having this word gives her focus, direction, and guardrails, so she doesn't get distracted.
I told her about my reservations and past experiences with the Word of the Year. What she told me changed everything!
I was choosing the wrong type of word. Your word needs to be action-oriented and something you want to become. I know think of it as a way I want to expand and stretch myself.
I took her workshop on how to find the perfect Word of the Year, to set an intention you can stick to.
I finally understood how to pick a good word and decided to embrace Word of the Year in 2024.
After a bit of reflection, my word just jumped out on the page and felt completely right for where I am right now and where I want to be by the end of the year, my WOTY is for both personal growth and business growth.
I now have a new word of the year and I wear it on my wrist as a daily reminder. I love jewelry so a WOTY jewelry piece is perfect for me! The gemstone beads also match my intention and are specially chosen for what they represent.
My 2024 word of the year is CREATIVE So far this year I have already embraced my creative side in all facets of my life - from work, to hobbies and family.
I ask myself each morning what can I do today that is CREATIVE.
It has been transformative so far and I am less than 2 months in.
I actually give a lot of credit to my wearing my word each day. This bracelet carries a daily reminder of my Word of the Year.
It is also pretty and a great conversation starter!
I wear it:
So I don't forget
So I stay on track
So I stay inspired

I've settled on my Word of the Year, introducing my year of being CREATIVE
I want to embrace creativity in everything from the little choices such as what I make for dinner to actually creating the things I've been ideating on for a long time but haven't made a priority.
The background of this post is actually part of a painting I did last year. I am not an artist but I did enjoy the process of being creative and painting so hopefully more of that will play a big part in my year of embracing being Creative.
