Is It Time To Spring Clean Your Business? Simplify Your eCommerce to Maximize Profit and Reduce Stress

You might be in the mood to spring clean your closet, your kitchen, bathroom cabinet... but what about your business?

This is one of my favorite times of year to run a Spring Cleaning sale to get rid of all that old stock. I schedule one as part of my Seasonal Spring Planning Process every year.

How to Improve Profit in your eCommerce Store

To improve your profit we start by simplifying the business inventory through a decluttering sale.

My favorite way to do this is to turn old inventory into cash that I can then use to improve systems, or buy better higher margin product.

Start by doing an analysis of your stale inventory, low sellers or misc items - returns, samples, broken sizes are easy places to start.

Step 1: Run the reports to find what inventory needs to go

I know exactly what I need to get rid of because I've recently completed my year-end inventory for taxes.

You can also run reports in Shopify and look for those stock levels of 1 or 2 and make a collection in your shop with those items.

I have a pile of misc products, samples, returns, and things I'm simply tired of sitting on my shelves that can easily be added to that sale collection.

Step 2: Create a sale collection and messaging

Create the collection and choose your discount and get to marketing that sale! Deeper discounts and short time promotions get better results. Keep the promotion to under a week and offer discounts as deep as you can go. Remember you need to turn this stuff into cash - ideally breaking even or making a small profit.

Your marketing plan will include the messaging around your sale, popular options are:

    • Secret Sale

    • Insiders Sale

    • Warehouse sale

    • Seconds Sale

    • Treasure Hunt

Step 3: Write out your marketing plan and implement

Your marketing plan is simply how you will get the word about the sale. It should have 2 stages.

      1. The warm-up period to tell your audience what the sale is and why it will be great for them. Details of when it starts, what the discounts are and how they can learn more. The best way to do this is have a landing page for sign-ups.

      2. The sale itself. Remind your audience via all your channels that a sale is happening and that it won’t last long.

    • Static social media posts (IG, Facebook, Threads, etc)

    • Video social media (Reels, lives, TikTok)

    • E-mail your list - This is the most important! Email at least 3 times about your promotion.

    • Teaser before it starts , When the sale is live , Last chance with a deadline.

Step 4: Spend your cash wisely

Once you succeed in spring cleaning that inventory and turn it back into cash you need to be thoughtful about where you will spend those funds.

    • Pay off debts such as taxes, Shopify loans, credit cards, etc

    • ,Or reinvest to buy the RIGHT inventory for summer that will bring bigger margins.
